I ‘ve had this particular pair of gray wide leg trousers for so long, they are easily one of the oldest pieces in my closet. Of course it is easy to style a classic in a classic way, over and over, but what do you do when you are searching for a trend-inspired look and all you can see in your wardrobe are the same old things?

The fact of the matter is, its relatively easy to teach an old classic new tricks if you are willing to look outside of the style box a bit. One of my favorite ways to find inspiration is looking through style blogs, instagram, and my favorite fashion mags to see what silhouettes are trending in any given season. More likely than not, you won’t need to go on a shopping expedition to scoop up the look of the moment. If, like me, you have some tried and true pieces that are high-quality enough to have been around for a few seasons, all you need is a little inspiration to put some of-the-moment style hacks to use and give them a trendy update.

How to Execute It

If you are aiming to pull off a trend-inspired look, you’ll want to pay attention to two things. Both are relatively easy, but you need to put them together with a “steady hand” if you want the finished look to be trend-inspired and not confused.

1 Keep it cohesive. Don’t mix too many trends or too many details into one outfit. Choose what your statement trend is, and work backward from the piece you need to achieve it.

Here, I’m using my classic gray trousers, and I’ve tucked them into the ankle strap of my heels in one of the biggest influencer trends we’ve seen this season. This look is all about the silhouette, so I chose to keep the rest of the look pared back with a gray wrap cardigan and a white button down.

2 Style it intentionally. You need to commit to owning the trend you’re wearing. If you use a classic piece and only “sort of style it” in an attempt at a modern look, the end result will be that you look like you’re trying too hard and not achieving anything.

For this look, the tied ankle trend works because it has a healthy dose of insouciance. Playing off of that, I made sure the rest of the look had a bit of a deconstructed style to it as well. It all stops just a hair short of sloppy, has an air of cool to it, and no single piece of clothing takes away from any other. There’s no doubt that this is a Look-with-a-capital-L, even though each individual piece is really nothing super special or trend-driven.

Give it a shot! Step out of your old classic comfort zone and put together a look that’s fashion photo worthy. What have you got to lose?

XOXO,
